A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones really shows how no matter what other ties exist, really the ties of blood over-ride, whether for good or ill.

Moving along

Well - I did finally get out on my bike.  My mountain bike that is on the rail trail....what a sissy pants!  It was a pretty warm day and I could have ridden the road bike but my collar bone and neck muscles have been killing me since 12/1.  I either hurt myself scrubbing the bathtub or doing a workout again (had been over a month), or both.
It was pretty nice as usual on the Blackstone Riverway.  I didn't see the egret but did see some swans, ducks and geese.  The last time I was there I did see some different water birds that I was unable to identify.
Since 11/27, I have run every third day and some of it with the Lu.  Yesterday I took her for over 5 miles on the same rail trail and we ran most of it.  Turned out to be 13 minute mile average.  A blue jay flew across our path to say hello.
We've (the Lu and me) been walking a lot as well.  Prior to this week it wasn't every day but at least 2 miles each time.  This week we have put in over 10 miles walking.  I've also run over 8 and biked almost 12 (was really slow due to the 15+ MPH winds at the river).

A difficult couple of weeks

The weather has been great - except for the very strong cold winds the last two days - but it has been a difficult couple of weeks since Willow stopped being able to get up and use her back legs on Veteran's Day, 11/12/12.  I've been making sure she gets turned on other side every four hours latest, so being unemployed has been a blessing for this.  Getting up at 3 AM every morning to turn her over is no problem, but I have been so tired I just couldn't get up the energy to ride my bike.

We've had some really beautiful days together - these two weeks have been exceptional weather-wise.  One day there was a perfectly blue sky through the stark limbs of the willow tree we were lying under.  All of a sudden, through the limbs there is this really short and perfect rainbow in a shape I'd never seen.  To me it was a sign from the Universe that Willow is a very loved and special dog, and that our time together was right.

I can't believe tomorrow is the day.  She seemed so tired when I brought her in two days ago - like it was just getting to be too much.  And then it didn't.  But tonight it was really hard for her to use her front legs - she is getting fatigued.  I am tired too, but I will go as long as it is right.

Local Bike ride

Went back to the road bike yesterday because of the terrible squealing the mtn bike does. For the first time ever got chased by dogs. First, a beagle of all things on the busiest road. Then, 2 dogs who at least had the sense to stay in their yard while chasing. I made a "easy boy" noise and they were fine. The crazy beagle though - didn't even see him/her, just thought I had dog barking in my ears and then on the left of me (in the road) here is this little one chasing right next to me.

Was really slow though...feel like I just started and haven't been riding regularly for a while...

Update

Biked twice at Blackstone and once around home since last post.  Saw the egret once and swans with lots of ducks.  So lucky for this nice place, even if bordered by roads and houses.

Ran six times, once on treadmill at gym.  Doing over three miles each time...close to four.  Worked out only twice but walked a lot.

Biking and running update

Since my last biking post on 9/26, I've biked once each week. I've looked for the egret and have sent it every time except once, hovering near the water like a statue. What an amazing bird!

I biked the Blackstone on the 5th and 12th. On the 12th it poured rain on me and I only went 14 miles, 18+ the first day. On the 12, my feet got more and more cold and when I stopped, I literally fell off the bike because I couldn't feel my feet anymore. On the ride home I shivered and at home took a hot shower but my feet were still white and plastic like for a while.

I also biked local for 12 miles on the 15th and 18.5 at Blackstone this past Monday (10/22). Feel a little like slow motion.

As for running...I ran between 3 - 5 miles every 4th day for the first two weeks of this past month. I did a 5+ trail and just felt like nothing worked. Stupidly, I increased my workout weight for leg presses and think I hurt my knees...I guess I felt like using the same weight wasn't doing anything...but it was keeping me from hurting myself!

Anyway, I only ran once last week for 3 miles and 2.5 miles this week. I will do another trail run hopefully this week.

I only swam once at the end of last month and haven't since. I should try to do that at least once per week.

Ideally - Bike x 2, run x 2, swim x 1, work out x 3...

Never getting by

Ran a little (1.25) w/ The Lu and then another 2.5 alone in the Attleboro area. Back hurt, foot hurt - I need to be able to run at least 10 miles in two weeks...ugghhh!!! Oh - although it rained a weekend and will tonight, the "Parks and Recreation Dept." thought it would be a great idea to water the soccer fields today. At least they didn't do it while it was pouring rain - like they usually do. Must have some nice palm-burning friendship (i.e. deal) with the water company. And believe me, it costs a lot to water around here. Glad someone is taking all the tax money I pay instead of where I need it - the SIDEWALKS! F-ers!!!

Here is a really cool remix from NPR:

Amazing what a note to the newspaper will do.

Today me and The Lu did a short run around the neighborhood. Guess what? The sidewalk going over the bridge (that we've asked to clean up in May) got done. Of course they left a million little bottles that someone has thrown out. But since I complained about how much they are using of my taxes to mow the field EVERY DAY, and how the sidewalks are UNSAFE to walk on, Mr. Newspaper man must have given the heads up to his Mayor buddy.

God day / bad day

Well...today was the bad day if yesterday was the God day.

Went running with the Lu at Slater and guess what...

A poor little garden snake was run over by a bike right in the middle of the trail.

And the worse thing is that Slater is not a bike trail.  Its so short - only 2.25 miles long - that mostly old folks, mothers and kids walk/run there.

Unfortunately, dumb ass people or their ignorant kids just plow over anything in their way.  That's how people grow up to be assholes...

Wow

Today on a bike ride along the Blackstone Riverway, I saw a couple of interesting things.

On the way out, the first was a beautiful egret standing right next to a bunch of cat-tails waiting for something to swim by. At first I barely saw it out of the corner of my eye, but then I stopped to look closely. It saw me too but stayed motionless.

On the way back, across the path I saw what I thought was a dead snake.  When I got closer, I saw it was alive but not really moving.  I thought it would likely get run over by a careless biker so I used a long stick and tried to get it to move in the direction it seemed to be going in.  It did move much faster but it was also not happy with me at all and started spitting and rattling it tail.  It took me awhile since I didn't want to hurt it and I didn't want to stress it too much.  Finally it went all the way across and through the fence but would not go any further.  I figured I did my good deed for the day and hoped it wouldn't come back across.

Ruining our world

Went to Slater Park three times this week. Yesterday we saw a beautiful egret. We also saw a large frog that I moved across the trail so she wouldn't get run over by a bike. A couple of days ago I saw a flock of ducks flying along the little river to land in the very low water. The swans also look gigantic.

A couple of years ago I saw a young beaver terrified and trying to get back in the river but the fence was messing him up. The water level is unbelievably low right now. I haven't seen anything like this in 12 years.

What I really wanted to talk about is the pollution collected along the giant tree down across the river. This trail is only 2.25 miles long. There are garbage cans at the beginning and the end. There are also a bunch of cans 1/3 along the way - which is less than an 1/8 mile from the collection of garbage. So, along a 1/3 mile of trail/river there are about 10 garbage cans available but lazy people that don't deserve this world at all just throw their Duncan Donuts plastic cups and other garbage in the river. There was a spray can of some poison there as well.

Then there's the other idiots with dogs that don't pick up the shit. If you walk a dog you should own bags to pick up their dropping. But at Slater they provide bags for you if you've forgotten! Imagine that! But these less than idiot brained assh.... just leave the shit there to pollute the water, get on the shoes of others, and worse yet - make it so responsible dog owners either get blamed or will eventually not have use of the park. People like these are ruining our world and don't deserve it.

Bike ride on the rail trail

Did a 17 mile bike ride along the Blackstone Riverway. A poor squirrel had been hit by a bike I'm sure and was dead. Blood coming out of its mouth. Yes, there are times when animals run out on the trail, but I have always slowed down completely and made a lot of noise so they run back in woods. There is absolutely no reason a bike ride has priority over a life. Those people are just self-serving assholes.

Recovery week three

Walked 1 mile on Sunday, 1.15 Monday, 1.5 Tuesday, 1.6 Wednesday, 1.5 Thursday, 1.8 Friday and 0.5 Saturday (The Lu was too cold). It took me a lot longer that normal each day, so even if I think I feel better it seems I am doing pretty slow. Stomach was tight and a little funny early in the week. I did try a few floor exercises thinking I should start that as well, but it may have been too soon...

By the end of the week was feeling a lot better but still crazy tired. "Ran" on the Elliptical really slowly for 20 minutes on Thursday and then 32 on Saturday. Belly was a little tight but not bad.

Stats for the week:

Recovery week two

Things not as good as I had hoped for this week but the nurse said everything was actually really good. She thought walking 0.75 mile on Friday was great...so oh well then.

Anyway, still a lot of tugging kind of feeling on lower incision site. Walk did feel better today and didn't have to hold belly at all. This evening pretty tired and did feel like holding belly...

Stats for the week:
Walk: 3.65 mi, 1:54 hrs
Miles Moving: 3.65 mi, 1:54 hrs
Hours Exercising: 1:54

February stats:

A new month

Well - I felt more upright when doing my 0.45 walk today. Lower belly ached a little, funny feeling really. Today was really tired and my belly is definitely aching now. Was able to touch toes and wash feet in shower for the first time. Have to be careful doing things even moving clothes that seem so light - pulling or pushing put strain on my belly.

January Stats

Bad start of year with being sick for a week and then having my surgery...oh well

January stats:
Run: 45.7 mi, 7:19 (All elliptical)

Miles Moving: 58.3 mi, 12:37
Strength: 7x, 5:26

Surgery recovery week

1/31
Had my foot MRI today. What crazy stuff we have for health insurance. The doctor originally told me I would have a "contrast", when they called they said I wasn't going to have a contrast so no special instructions. When I got there they said I needed a contrast and shouldn't have had ibuprofen. I told them I've been taking it around the clock and was just about to again. They said not to and because it is hard on the kidneys as is the contrast. Oh boy!

I had never had an MRI and didn't know what to expect - and they didn't bother either. It took over an hour and my butt bone was killing me and I wasn't supposed to move. Sometimes it sounded like a drumming, others like a submarine submerging and also like a space ship. Anyway, it is not broken or fractured or even my bursa, but inflammed tendon and fat pad - whatever the f that is. No help but no running for 6 weeks - excuse me I haven't been running for almost 8 weeks now for crying out loud!

1/30
Not too much better, still feel like an old lady. Walked maybe .5 mile overall. Ha Blue's funeral service and went to lunch while waiting for the ashes. It was very sad and exhausting. Bethany is very sad. It was good that Audrey was there too.

1/29
Tried a .35 mile walk. During it I didn't feel I was going so slow, maybe about 75 years old. Stomach tight but not so hunched over. Had to take Blue in for euthanasia, he was very sick overnight and we thought he might stop breathing. It was very sad but necessary. I feel wrecked emotionally. The car ride, although not walking, jostles things around and causes me to tighten all the time. It's about 2 PM now and everything hurts down there. When I lift my left leg just to walk it tugs really hard. I must have overdone it. I honestly can't believe someone said they could run two week after this type of surgery. Need to nap now...

Surgery week

I was scheduled to have probably a hysterectomy on 1/24/12, with the possibility of just myomectomies for the fibroids instead. For details (gross and otherwise) about bowel cleanse and surgery day, please see the Myomectomy page.

1/23
Bowel cleanse day and clear fluid diet.

1/24
Surgery day - had to be at BI hospital in Boston by 6 AM.
About 8 AM they wheeled me out of the room and into surgery.
At about 12:15 the doctor called Audrey about the surgery said that I was in recovery. Since I ended up having the myomectomy instead of the hysterectomy, they said I was going home that day.
I was in recovery over an hour and then wheeled to an outpatient recovery at about 2 PM.
At about 5 PM we drove home. This wan't a short ride either - Boston to Attleboro. Not able to lift my legs into clothes or even up on bed - very hard.

1/25
My stomach from ribs to pelvis felt as if I had been used as a punching bag. Lower back starting to kill. Able to lift legs a little - need frame of bed for intermediate step.

1/26
Not feeling much better, slept like crap. On just ibuprofen today. Back really hurting as well as my sides. Bethany very stressed with me being out of it, tube feeding Blue, and Blue being very sick. Able to put my own PJ pants on. Can lift leg about 10 inches and bend a little more but its very hard though.

1/27
Feeling a little better today but still not much sleep. More like the lower-portion of my stomach was pummeled, not the whole thing. Get pains when sitting down or getting up. Trying to walk around more but feel a lot of pulling. Back a bit better since less on my butt bones. Feel tugging when turning, lifting legs or bending but a bit better. Blueby terrible during the evening. Bethany and me very sad even though some improvement with his stools.

1/28
Stomach a bit better but still pulling/pinching when sitting up or down this morning. At least I feel like all the anesthesia is out of my system. Tried a .25 mile walk across the street. Amazed how slow I am walking and slightly bent over. I feel like I look like an 80 year old. Was feeling it so didn't do more. Was sore and very tired in the afternoon. There is no way I'd be able to do the 1.5 minimum walk for work I do on Monday (two days away). Able to lift legs more easily and bend better but still hurts and pinches. Blue's stools improving but he is very run down and not happy.

Sick week

Was sick all week - first time in years had such a bad cold. Needless to say I didn't exercise at all, was barely able to do anything in fact. The one day I went to work, walking 2 miles, it totally wiped me out.

Stats for the week:
Walk: 2 mi, 0:40
Miles Moving: 2 mi, 0:40
Hours Exercising: 0:40

January stats:
Run: 45.7 mi, 7:19 (All elliptical)
Walk: 11 mi, 4:10
Miles Moving: 54.7 mi, 11:29
Strength: 7x, 5:26
Hours Exercising: 16:55

Interlude

Well...I haven't exercised at all this week. Sunday I woke up with a horrendous migraine that kept me lying down all day. By the afternoon I felt better but also like I was coming down with something. Basically I felt like I couldn't take a complete breath. Monday got worse, Tuesday even worse and today, Wednesday, not so good either.

I am going to be Zen about this. I've been trying to really stay in shape because I haven't been able to run (foot bursitis) and I will be out of action for maybe six weeks after my surgery next week. I also added a lot of (very good) heavy lifting to build core and upper-body strength, as well as leg muscle power. I've probably run myself down a bit enough to pick up the crazy germs going around.

My forced respite will at least make my foot get better hopefully and I can catch up with reading and blogging. I also have to re-adjust my goals for 2012/2013. I may be rushing into my first half-Ironman when I don't know how quickly I can start pushing hard. But swimming and biking are probably a lot less hard on the body then running. I though I could do both the TransRockies run and a full Ironman for my 50th in 2013, but that may be much, but maybe not.

Anyway, I'm going to rest, plan, relax and not worry about everything.

Elliptical Blues

It is awesome that I can go to the YMCA and exercise on machines when I can't run! I'm never complaining about injuries again, I am lucky I have what I have!

Felt a little run down on today's workout - strength wasn't 100% - but had a good week with strength anyway. "Running" mileage was lower than anticipated but lots going on at home making extra trip to the gym difficult.

Stats for the week:
Run: 20.4 mi, 3:11 (elliptical)
Walk: 4 mi, 1:20
Miles Moving: 24.4 mi, 4:31
Strength: 3x, 2:50
Hours Exercising: 7:21

January stats:
Run: 45.7 mi, 7:19 (All elliptical)
Walk: 9 mi, 3:30
Miles Moving: 54.7 mi, 10:49
Strength: 7x, 5:26
Hours Exercising: 16:15
